- Description
- Harmil Ledge and Dunphy's Pass
The walk is on Narrow Neck at Katoomba. It is graded 4 and is suitable for less experienced walkers who like a challenge.
Harmil Ledge is newer pass of Narrow Neck, discovered by George Harley and Geoffrey Milton in the 1950s. (See M Keats and B Fox, The Passes of Narrow Neck). This walk links Harmil Ledge to Dunphys Pass (1926).
We begin at the locked gate on Narrow Neck and follow the access road to the Fire Tower. (6 km) The road is undulating and offers great views of the Megalong and Jamison Valleys.
Just past the fire tower we descend to Harmil Ledge. After signing the visitors' book, we follow Harmil Ledge for 900m. The ledge is quite wide and there are excellent views across the Wild Dogs Mountains all the way to Kanangra Walls. The descent of Glenraphael Head is achieved through a cleft on the sheltered side. A rope will be set for those who need it.
Once below the cliff line we follow a well worn track under the cliff line to the climb to Dunphys Pass. We pick up the ledge leading to the exit, a steep climb through the cliffs to Glenraphael Swamp. A track crosses the swamp and brings us to the road that takes us to the Fire Tower then the locked gate.
