Devils Wilderness history walk
In 1804 the explorer George Caley descended into the Devils Wilderness via a pass that he described in his journal in some detail. That pass is still there today just as Caley found it, unnamed and uncommermorated. We will trace a portion of Caley’s route, including the aforementioned pass, as far as the junction of Wilderness Brook and the Grose. From there we will follow the Grose downstream to a gully below Dark Creek where we will exit to Browns ridge and the fire trail back to Paterson Range and our vehicles. Expect a long, hard day. Off track with one 10 meter climb down. Caley used a rope fashioned from vines. We will use a tape fashioned from synthetic fibres!

Glow worms at Horseshoe falls
For those of you that do not have to scramble to get ready for the Christmas madness… These are my preferred Christmas lights I would rather see. Come and see the glow worms at my local waterfall. Ssh don’t tell anyone though, this is a local secret. Start at the end of Alexander Ave, we will walk to Fairy Falls, then continue to Horseshoe falls. We will come back to this one when it is dark to see the glow worms. Here we can also go to Glow Worm Nook if we are up to it. Further along the track we walk past Lena Falls to get to Oakland Falls then Burgess Falls, then backtrack to the glow worms. There are a few steep scrambles to get down to the falls but if you take it slow and steady it is not too hard, but it is usually muddy. It is all on track but you will need to wear sturdy shoes and bring a head lamp.

Christmas Lights - Grand Canyon by Night
Grand Canyon at night sparkles with glow worms! If you haven't done it by night it is worth stumbling over wet rocks in the dark to see them. And for those that have done it, it is always a great trip. There is only one 17m overhanging abseil at the start but after that there is a lot of wading, scrambling and a few swims with the extra challenge of being dark. Despite being summer it gets cold at night in the canyon, particular after the first swim. Wetsuits and all the usual abseiling gear is needed, as well as a waterproof torch and spare batteries. We will start a bit before sunset but won't be back at the cars until late, probably around 11:00 pm. Like previous years, we will bring a bit of Christmas fare and have a late night feast at the end of the canyon before climbing back up to the cars.
