Late Finishes and Driving Home

While most UBMBC activities finish as planned, unexpected delays can sometimes occur. Late finishes can introduce additional risks both during the activity and when travelling home afterwards. Leaders and participants should be aware of these risks, prepare appropriately, and make sensible decisions that prioritise the safety and wellbeing of all members.

Late Finishes

The UBMBC committee is aware that occasionally club activities finish later than anticipated. Some have unexpectedly finished very late at night. This may be due to various factors such as weather, navigational difficulties, challenging terrain or problems experienced by group members.

Walking longer hours and in particular night walking introduces additional hazards.

If a potential late return may be anticipated, leaders should attempt to mitigate these risks by:

  • Before the activity informing members that a later finish may occur
  • Being aware of the night weather forecast
  • Advising members of additional equipment they should carry: head torches, batteries, warm clothing, additional food, water, hydralites, etc
  • Monitoring members for fatigue and cramps
  • Monitoring members for hypothermia, particularly if swimming or wading is involved or the night is very cold
  • Being aware that some members may have difficulty with night vision

Because the party is late it may incline them to try and rush but if it is dark additional care needs to be taken, e.g. with cliff edges, low tree branches or uneven surfaces and a slower pace needs to be anticipated.

Driving Home

After a long or strenuous activity, particularly if it finishes late, getting home also presents risks. If people are tired there is a real risk they may fall asleep at the wheel. This is of particular concern where members have long drives home. Nocturnal animals can add additional hazards. Safety of drivers and passengers on the way home should be taken as seriously as risks inherent in the day’s activity.

Where members are tired or the drive home is long they should:

  • Consider how fatigued they really are
  • Consider taking a rest break before driving home or stopping mid trip for a rest break
  • Sharing the driving
  • Taking a sleeping bag and driving home in the morning
  • Staying with friends rather than driving all the way home
